So you want to “adapt” Scrum?

Even at the risk of being labeled as extremist or inflexible, I am very reluctant to make adaptations to the Scrum framework.

What do you mean by adaptations?

It is possible that in your process you have not yet achieved that everything that is defined in the Scrum Guide is carried out as it is in each. Maybe there is a team that is not yet able to see the need for a review. In some cases there might be people who still do not see the need to do a Daily Scrum correctly.

I see this as simply stages of the Scrum adoption process. In my case I accept things, knowing that they are not well, when I know that meanwhile I can work on something that will bring great benefits to the team or if I know that they are in the process of assimilating first something that will lead them to that same conclusion. But my focus is always to make clear that this will have to evolve in a while, that we will have to revisit it and work on it.

I can not change everything at once or force everything to head butts. I can not and I do not want to. The change of step by step has worked very well for me and it seems to me that it helps people to assimilate instead of obeying some rules. However, do not confuse acceptance with resignation. “It’s not the right time” is not the same as “it does not matter” or “the Scrum Guide are just recommendations”.


I know I can be called inflexible, but in fact, there are not so many things that Scrum marks as necessary for the whole process to work.

It is a lightweight framework with very few concrete indications. Explains little but it is firm and clear in what it explains. Gives indications and reasons for them. It exposes what must be achieved with each thing and how.

Each one of those roles, events and artifacts are there for many reasons.

Assuming that an event is optional, that a role is not essential or that the order of some things can be altered is, from my point of view, breaking a delicate balance that you may not yet understand at all.  

Surely you should do the exercise of reflecting and see if you are not, even without realizing it, trying to change the framework to avoid having to change yourself, your team or your company.

You can call it something else. Put another name or say that you do not want to implement it in the way it is studied, tested and proven by thousands of companies, but please do not call it “being more flexible” or “adapting Scrum”.
